Steve Valentino passed for two second-quarter touchdowns and had 317 total yards to lead Dayton to a home victory against Robert Morris, 28-14, in both teams' opener Saturday.
Valentino hit Justin Watkins for a 24-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-10, giving the Flyers of the Pioneer League a 14-0 lead with 8:26 left in the first half. The play, which followed a timeout, capped a 94-yard, 13-play drive.
After holding the Colonials of the Northeast Conference to a three-and-out, Dayton scored again as Valentino connected with Nick Collins for a 4-yard score.
Valentino rushed for 106 yards and was 19 for 37 passing for 211 yards and two interceptions for the Flyers, who held possession for 37 minutes.
Watkins made eight catches for 95 yards.
Robert Morris quarterback Jeff Sinclair was 14 for 29 for 146 yards, including a 33-yard third-quarter score to Anthony Coleman.
California 42, Saginaw Valley State 41: Cedrick Cherry ran 17 yards for a score and caught a 22-yard pass from Josh Portis for another as the visiting Vulcans held off the Cardinals.
IUP 16, Southern Connecticut 6: Pat Smith completed 11 of 21 passes for 111 yards and Harvie Tuck rushed for 98 yards as IUP edged Southern Connecticut.
Edinboro 20, West Liberty 19: Visiting Edinboro scored a touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Cody Harris to D'mar Jeter with 4:19 left to pull out the victory. The pass completed a 12-play, 80-yard drive for the Fighting Scots. Harris completed 13 of 19 passes for 144 yards, and Drew Herrell rushed for 71 yards on 19 carries for Edinboro,
Westminster 23, Hiram 6: The visiting Titans got 123 yards rushing from John Proano and quarterback Shane Lehocky passed for 76 yards and ran for another 64. Westminster finished with 198 yards rushing to Hiram's 55.
Bridgewater 19, Saint Vincent 14: The Bearcats scored on an 8-yard pass from Aaron Smetanka to Sheldon Loughner with 9:27 left to play to close the gap to 17-14 but could get no closer. Bridgewater held Saint Vincent to 85 yards rushing.
Carnegie Mellon 28, Grove City 21: Freshman quarterback Rob Kalkstein, a Gateway High School graduate, completed 5 of 7 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown and Jake Nardone scored on a 54-yard run as Carnegie Mellon won its opener for the 12th consecutive season. Grove City running back Clayton Hall ran for 228 yards and two scores in the nonconference game.
Allegheny 28, Bethany 0: Quarterback T.J. Salopek completed 19 of 28 passes for 207 yards and four scores in leading the visiting Gators.
Liberty 52, St. Francis 7: Kyle Harbridge scored the games first touchdown on a 38 yards run but that was the high point of the contest for the Red Flash. Liberty had 599 yards total offense.
New Haven 34, Seton Hill 17: Seton Hill (1-1) limited visiting New Haven to 17 yards rushing but had trouble against the pass in the loss at Offutt Field. Seton Hill quarterback D.J. Lenehan completed 25 of 45 passes for 229 yards, but threw three interceptions.
