Family Film Guide: "Eat Pray Love," and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"
Friday, August 13, 2010
The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:
'Eat Pray Love'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Mature tweens and up.

What you should know: Julia Roberts stars in an adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert's book about the year she spent in Italy, India and Indonesia after her divorce. The movie deals with mature matters and is 21/4 hours long.

Language: One very adult 12-letter word, a couple of uses of profanity and less than a dozen mild expletives. An Italian girl gives tourists the finger.

Sexual situations and nudity: A man strips off his clothing, and you see his bare butt. A reference is made to a woman having a dry sexual spell, and couples kiss or slip into a bedroom for unseen interludes.

Violence/scary situations: A Bali woman recounts, briefly, being struck by her ex-husband, and it's evident that divorce takes a stiff emotional toll.

Drug or alcohol use: Lots of beer and, especially, wine are consumed by adults.

'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Tweens and up.

What you should know: Michael Cera stars in a movie version of the Bryan Lee O'Malley graphic novels. He's a 22-year-old Toronto slacker who starts to date a woman whose "evil exes" (six men and one woman) appear and try to defeat him.

Language: Less than a dozen mild four-letter expletives and use of a crude three-letter word for posterior.

Sexual situations and nudity: Kisses are exchanged, and lots of jokes made about an irresistible gay character.

Violence/scary situations: Much comic-book-style violence with punches, fights and falls and the development of instant superpowers.

Drug or alcohol use: Young adults drink beer and hang out in clubs.
