Charges dropped in Homewood homicide
Friday, March 12, 2010

A Monroeville man was released from jail Thursday after homicide charges against him were withdrawn.

Michael A. Winston, 36, had been scheduled to appear today at a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court, Downtown, in connection with the shooting death more than two years ago of Lamon R. Kyser III, 34, outside a Homewood night club.

Eyewitnesses had told police they saw the two men arguing after Mr. Kyser, admiring a gold necklace worn Nov. 11, 2007, by Mr. Winston, touched the jewelry without Mr. Winston's permission.

Later, the two men were seen shaking hands, and they were seen hugging outside the 30-30 Club before another man fired shots at Mr. Kyser.

The incident was captured on surveillance camera video that showed Mr. Winston running from the scene and getting into an SUV before driving away.

Mr. Winston had been held without bail until his release.
