Butler County voter registration hits high mark
Sunday, October 12, 2008

Voter registration in Butler County has hit an all-time high but the county's top elections official said he believes the Nov. 4 general election will be a smooth one despite expectations of a large turnout.

The total number of registered voters after Tuesday's registration deadline is 120,830. Election Bureau Director Regis Young said the number likely will climb to beyond 121,000 when transfers from other counties are entered.

"It's the highest ever,'' he said.

The number of voters registered for the spring primary election was about 116,000.

As usual, the Republican party captured the highest number with 59,938, followed by the Democrats with 46,816. The next biggest chunk was "no affiliation" at 5,667 followed by "no party" at 5,495. "Independents" totaled 1,724. The rest are a smattering of ranging from one "capitalist" to eight "moderates" to 202 "other."

Mr. Young said presidential elections generally draw larger than usual turnouts so he's expecting the county's polling places to be busy. Toward that end, he has broken up some of the larger districts in Center and Cranberry.

"I'm keeping my fingers crossed; no problems,'' he said.

In the April primary election, turnout topped 53 percent for registered Democrats and nearly 30 percent for the Republicans.

The numbers of voters registered for the last presidential election four years ago was about 110,000.
