Mother charged with abandoning infant in Homewood
Thursday, October 09, 2008

A woman accused of abandoning her two-week old baby in an alley in Homewood yesterday told police she expected the baby's father to come and get the child, so she left, police said.

LaFawn Ebo, 24, of Homewood, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child in the incident, which happened about 2 p.m. when a motorist spotted the baby girl in a car seat in an alley on Felicia Way and called police.

The baby was taken by medics to Children's Hospital, where she was found to be in good condition, Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said last night.

Ms. Ebo told detectives she left the child in the alley because she thought she saw the girl's father down the street and expected him to come get her. Ms. Ebo then got into her cousin's car and left, Cmdr. Stangrecki said.

While police were at Children's Hospital, Ms. Ebo called the Zone 5 police station and told them she was going there to speak with officers. The baby's father, who has not been charged, also spoke with police last night.
