Starbucks is no longer included in the retail complex that will be built on the site of the former Chesterfield's Restaurant along Route 30 West in North Huntingdon.
The Seattle-based coffee company has scrapped plans for a "quick stop" Starbucks Cafe in a project being developed by Walnut Capital Partners North Huntingdon, LP.
Walnut Capital is searching for a tenant to replace it. A Walgreens Pharmacy is still included in the project.
Confirmation of the Starbucks action was included among engineering review comments for the development by Adam J. Law of Hampton Technical Associates Inc.
"Once a new tenant is found, that area will be seeded [and] a revised site plan will be presented to the township for approval," said Mr. Law, senior project manager.
Township planning director-engineer Andy Blenko informed the North Huntingdon planning commission of the Starbucks decision Monday night.
Speculation that Starbucks might pull out began earlier this year when worsening economic conditions made the company scale down operations.
A Starbucks facility inside the Target store in North Huntingdon Square Shopping Center is unaffected.
The speculation grew stronger last month when Mr. Law presented a final concept drawing of only the new Walgreens for review by the township planning commission and commissioners. The concept was approved by both entities.
The Walnut Capital development is not associated with a project being developed 3 miles east along Route 30 by Cleveland-based Terra Group, representing WD North Huntingdon Investors, which would include a Walgreens store.
An estimated 25,000 cubic yards of earth and rock, taken during grading and site preparation of the Terra Group project, will be used in the earthwork of the Walnut Capital storm water management plan.
In a related matter, township planners unanimously approved a three-lot consolidation plan submitted by Kirk Haight Auto Sales on Route 30.
The approval is contingent on Mr. Haight's acquisition of a 0.106-acre parcel of township-owned property.
