Brother critically stabbed in East Liberty fight
Monday, October 06, 2008

A Larimer man was critically wounded today when his younger brother stabbed him in the leg in self-defense, police said.

The 22-year-old man, whose name was not released, was in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian after the fight, which happened about 2 p.m. at a home on Jennings Court in East Liberty.

Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said the man was not allowed in the house, but gained entry and began assaulting his 21-year-old brother, who lives there. After the attack, the younger brother called his mother to let her know what happened and then left. He later returned to the house, where his mother and grandmother were, and tried to calm his older brother, who started to attack him again, Cmdr. Stangrecki said.

The younger brother tried to get away but couldn't. Instead, he was able to retrieve a knife and stab his older brother in the left thigh, apparently damaging an artery. The older brother continued to struggle, then ran outside where he collapsed.

"The person who got stabbed was the aggressor in this incident," Cmdr. Stangrecki said.

Detectives have interviewed the man's relatives and his brother, he said. No charges have been filed, and the investigation continues.

Police were initially called for a domestic dispute with reports that two people were shot. That call was followed by another report that one brother stabbed the other with glass during an argument over a broken picture frame.
