High School Highlights: Garber's late touchdown leads Monaca to victory

Zach Garber's 30-yard touchdown run with 1:55 remaining lifted Monaca to a 21-14 victory yesterday against host South Side Beaver in a WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference football clash.

Monaca (5-1, 3-1), the Post-Gazette's No. 5-ranked WPIAL Class A team, got 164 yards rushing from standout back Tony Reda and 106 from Garber.

South Side Beaver (4-2, 2-2) was led by quarterback Michael Shaffer, who was 9 of 15 for 156 yards and a touchdown.

For Monaca, in addition to Garber's late score, Skyler Schultz had a 4-yard rushing touchdown and Reda had a 1-yard scoring run. South Side Beaver scored on a 52-yard pass play from Shaffer to Craig Conti and a Jordan Potts 1-yard run.

Other games

Perry 47, Allderdice 20: The Commodores (5-1, 5-1) raced to a 40-0 halftime lead and rolled to a win against the Dragons (0-6, 0-5) in City League play at Cupples Stadium. Richard Lowry and Djuan Wood each scored twice for Perry.

Western Beaver 20, Neshannock 10: Morgan Rice threw two touchdowns passes to lead host Western Beaver (4-2, 3-1) to the Class A Big Seven Conference win against Neshannock (3-3, 2-2).

Summit Academy 27, West Shamokin 6: The Knights (1-5, 1-5) earned their first win of the season, a Class AA Allegheny Conference triumph against visiting West Shamokin (0-6, 0-6). Mike Martin ran for 106 yards and a score for Summit.

Burgettstown 28, Frazier 14: Nick Tasz's two scores and 150 yards rushing pushed Burgettstown (2-4, 2-2) to a Class A Black Hills Conference win against visiting Frazier (3-3, 1-3).

Columbus Crusaders 41, Kiski School 21: Reggie Garner's two scores and 196 yards rushing weren't enough for Kiski School in a loss at home.

Cross country

Central Catholic Invitational: Natalie Bower of Latrobe cruised to the girls' A Division race title yesterday at Schenley Park, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 9 seconds. The finish in the boys' A Division race was much closer.

Seneca Valley's Cam Stauffer edged Canon-McMillan's Matt Gregory for first place in the boys' race, finishing in 15:55. Gregory had a time of 15:57 with Gateway's D.J. Krystek third in 16:03.

Jolene Kunkel of Knoch was 30 seconds behind Bower with Peters Township's Kayla Keddal third.

Latrobe won the girls' team title with 64 points. Knoch was a distant second with 126. Besides Bower, Latrobe had Abby Hewitt, who was fifth, and May Jo Jakubek, who was seventh, in the top 10.

Mt. Lebanon won the boys' team title, edging North Hills, 81-87, with Quaker Valley third.
