JACKSONVILLE -- The Steelers signed nose tackle Scott Paxson yesterday from their practice squad to back up Chris Hoke tonight against the Jaguars.
Paxson (6 feet 4, 292 pounds) played at Penn State and is in his second season on the Steelers practice squad. With starting nose tackle Casey Hampton out with a groin injury for the second game in a row, the Steelers felt they needed someone else to spell Hoke, especially in the heat and humidity in Florida.
Against Baltimore Monday night, starting defensive end Travis Kirschke also served as Hoke's backup.
To make room for Paxson, the Steelers released linebacker Patrick Bailey, signed two weeks ago to play special teams after Donovan Woods was injured.
