Miller Esker outing: Oct. 5
It's easy to drive past the serpentine mound of sand and gravel in Butler County without recognizing it as an unusual glacial feature.
The Miller Esker is a 23,000-year-old glacial formation deposited by melting glaciers during the last Ice Age. Lots of eskers once rose above Western Pennsylvania, but most have been leveled by sand and gravel mining operations. At 1 p.m. Oct. 5, staff from the Jennings Environmental Education Center will lead a two-hour educational hike to the special geological feature.
