A Garfield man was found dead yesterday in a fire in his residence, fire officials said.
Allen Nauls, 57, was found in front of a first-floor window after the fire was extinguished at 5:35 a.m.
The two-alarm fire was reported at 4:36 a.m. at the 21/2-story home in the 300 block of North Aiken Avenue.
Firefighters reported seeing flames coming from the front and side doors, and from the window beneath which the victim was found.
The flames scorched hedges on the front sidewalk as well, Deputy Fire Chief Frank E. Large said.
After the body was removed from the structure a second alarm was sounded because the fire had spread into the attic.
Firefighters said an inoperable smoke detector was found in the basement.
Mr. Nauls appears to have been home alone.
Damage was estimated at $80,000, and the cause is being investigated.
