It's time for The Fummies.
You've heard of the Emmys and Grammys, but The Fummies are the awards coaches and players aspire to get. They are The Fumbler's midseason awards. Winners will receive a bobblehead doll of Upper St. Clair coach Jim Render.
Player of the half-year: Gateway LB-RB Dorian Bell. He widely was considered the No. 1 player in the WPIAL coming into the season and has maintained that status with stellar play on defense -- and offense.
Seneca Valley QB C.J. Brown and Sto-Rox QB Paul Jones were next in line.
Coach of the half-year: Sam Albert, Highlands. Despite losing many starters, Albert has his team undefeated and ranked No. 3 in WPIAL Class AAA.
Game of the half-year: Tie. North Allegheny at Upper St. Clair and North Hills at Bethel Park. Both were decided on the same night on the final play of the game and only a few miles apart.
If you have any other nominations for awards, call WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley.
The Fumbler made the right call on 80 percent of the games last week as he compiled a 52-13 record. For the season, he is 238-74 (.763 pct.). Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top games:
Shaler (5-0 overall, 1-0 in conference) at North Allegheny (3-2, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- North Allegheny is 3-2, but the Tigers' 56-14 thrashing of Seneca Valley last week made a believer out of many, including The Fumbler. It has been a wonderful story for Shaler and first-year coach Neil Gordon, but the Titans will taste defeat for the first time. Winner: North Allegheny.
Beaver (5-0, 4-0) at Beaver Falls (5-0, 5-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- This game features two of the top 10 rushers in the WPIAL -- Beaver's Jake Nardone and Beaver Falls' Cody Cook. But the difference is that Beaver Falls has other potent offensive weapons than Cook. Beaver Falls is ranked No. 1 in WPIAL Class AA, Beaver No. 3. Winner: Beaver Falls.
Shady Side Academy (5-0, 5-0) at Ford City (5-0, 5-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- This is one of those mirror-images games. Both teams are 5-0. Both average 35 points a game. Both give up only 6 a game. The Nickel brothers -- Billy and Brian -- are two of Shady Side's top players. The Fumbler wants to know if, when they play on defense, is it Shady Side's "Nickel" package? Winner: Ford City.
Clairton (5-0, 3-0) at Chartiers-Houston (5-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Clairton, ranked No. 2 in Class A, has won every game by at least 41 points. Chartiers-Houston can give the Bears a game, but it can't beat Clairton. Winner: Clairton.
Brashear (5-0, 5-0) vs. Carrick (3-2, 3-1), 7:30 p.m. today -- This is one of the top games in the City League this season. No. 1 Brashear hasn't been challenged yet. No. 3 Carrick has enough talent to keep it close for a while, but not enough to win. Winner: Brashear.
