Three members of Boy Scout Troop 215 received the Eagle Award, the highest rank in scouting, at a Court of Honor held Sept. 7 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park.
To achieve Eagle rank, a scout must fulfill requirements in leadership, service and outdoor skills.
A key requirement is participation in a service project that has lasting effects on a community
Here are the new Eagles and their projects:
Steven Michael Gaddis, 17, son of Mark and Carol Gaddis, of Bethel Park, selected a project to honor the memory of his eighth-grade music teacher, Suzanne Reid. With 38 workers, Steven spent more than 211 man-hours landscaping and installing benches at the pavilion behind Independence Middle School. He is a Bethel Park High School senior who plans to major in architecture in college.
Joshua Paul Hartung, 18, son of Joseph and Elaine Hartung, of Bethel Park, led 20 people in 138 man-hours to install a rail fence in Simmons Park. The fence provides a barrier between the park and the embankment and creek below. Joshua is a 2008 graduate of Bethel Park High School, majoring in law enforcement at California State University.
Ryan Edward Prokopovich, 18, is the son of S. Richard and Phyllis Prokopovich, of Upper St. Clair. Ryan coordinated 25 workers in more than 188 man-hours to reconstruct benches and build flower boxes at Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park. The improvement project allows the church to use the area for outside worship and other activities. Ryan is attending Penn State University.
