Benefit dinner

There will be a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Heidingsfelder family of Forest Hills at 4 p.m. Saturday at Community United Methodist Church, 3487 Route 130, Irwin.

Fred "Skip" Heidingsfelder, 55, was diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia, a rare form of dementia, about three years ago. He was a self-employed businessman and a teacher at Community College of Allegheny County.

His wife, Dianne, 57, has scleroderma, polymyositis, spinal stenosis, Reynaud's disease and Sjogrens syndrome. Post-surgical complications have kept her from working.

Tickets are not needed for the dinner, which will cost $6 for adults, $4 for children. A concert will follow at 7.

Railroad Days in Derry

The Derry Borough Railroad Days Festival will begin at 6 tonight with a Hobo Picnic near the 2-Caboose Railroad Museum, near the tracks and post office.

Bowls of Hobo Stew, cooked over a campfire, will be served, along with a dirt cookie and a beverage. Participants may dress in "hobo style;" a Hobo King and Queen will be named; and there will be live music.

The festival will resume Saturday starting with a parade at 10 a.m. There will be food, crafts, face-painting, free Child Identification and other events.

Plum school events

One event is ongoing and one starts today at Plum High School.

The Girls Leaders Association will have a blood drive today from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the balcony of Gym 1. Donors may walk in.

The Students Against Destructive Decisions is collecting unwanted cell phones and sending them to a company for recycling. Proceeds will go to SADD.

Collection boxes are in the high school office, high school teacher Colleen Prokopik's classroom (232), Oblock Junior High, district elementary schools and the front office of the municipal building.

Republicans meet

Geneva McKee, of Monroeville, a delegate to the Republican National Convention, will talk about her experiences there at the Plum Borough Republican Committee meeting Monday.

It is open to all registered Republicans, and will begin at 7 p.m. in the Plum Senior Community Center, 499 Center-New Texas Road.

Plans for an Oct. 11 fundraiser and updates on borough council and the school board also are on the agenda.

Food drive

Energy Swing Windows, 3245 Miracle Drive, Murrysville, will have an open house and food drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Those who donate at least 10 canned food items will get a pumpkin.

Learn to live in the present

The program Seven-Minute Steps to Living in the Present will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oakmont Carnegie Library, 700 Allegheny River Blvd.

It will be presented by Eileen Colianni, counselor, author and library board member.

The focus will be on living for the moment, and to devote seven minutes a day to savor the present.

Youth Fishing Derby

The North Huntingdon Recreation Department's annual Youth Fishing Derby will run from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Indian Lake Park along Clay Pike.

The event is open to age 14 and under. Fees are $3 for residents, $5 for nonresidents. Registration at the Town House ended yesterday, but participants may register beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the park.

Woodland Hills preschool

A preschool program is being offered at Woodland Hills High School through the school's Child Development program.

Children who are 3 to 5 years old and live in the school district are eligible.

The program will begin Oct. 29 and run from 9 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for six weeks.

High school students will work with the children under direct supervision of child development teachers.

Parents must provide transportation.
