Home & Garden briefs: Composting class, waste pickup on tap

The Pennsylvania Resources Council has announced fall backyard composting classes. Pre-registration is required and each participant will receive an Earth Machine compost unit (one per family). This year the council also is offering worm composting classes. The registration fee includes a worm bin and about a half-pound of red wigglers. Fee for the composting class is $40 single, $50 couple; for worm composting, $45 or $55 per couple. For more information call 412-431-4449, ext. 325.

  • Next Saturday: Composting at The Urban Gardener, North Side, 11 a.m.
  • Sept. 30: Composting at the Elias Fry Barn, Marshall, 6:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 4: Composting at Frick Environmental Center, Squirrel Hill, 10 a.m.
  • Oct. 8: Composting at Robinson Township Office Facility, Robinson, 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 25: Composting at Harrison Hills Environmental Center, Natrona Heights, 10 a.m.

Household waste collection

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Hazardous Waste Task force will hold household hazardous waste collections 9 a.m.-1 p.m. next Saturday at Station Square and Oct. 4 at Bradys Run Park, Beaver County.

Residents can safely dispose of common household products such as cleaners, automotive fluids, paints, pesticides, car batteries and pool chemicals. A fee of $2 per gallon -- cash only -- will be charged for disposal. Information: 412-488-7452 or www.swpahhw.org.
