About People: 'Sex and the City' author to pen teen 'Carrie Diaries'
Thursday, September 18, 2008

Meet Carrie Bradshaw, in her teenage years.

"Sex and the City" author Candace Bushnell is writing a pair of teen novels, "The Carrie Diaries," that "takes readers back to Carrie Bradshaw's formative years in high school, giving an inside look at Carrie's friendships, romances and how she realized her dream of becoming a writer," HarperCollins announced.

The first book will come out in 2010. Bushnell, in a statement issued by her publisher, said, "Carrie in high school did not follow the crowd -- she led it. It was there that she began observing and commenting on the social scene."

Bushnell's adventures of Carrie and her Manhattan pals were adapted into the hit HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker and a feature film that came out this year. Her fifth novel, "One Fifth Avenue," is coming out this month.

Momma Spears speaks

The mother of Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears says Jamie Lynn told her she was pregnant in a note.

Lynne Spears said on NBC's "Today" show yesterday that Jamie Lynn -- 16 years old at the time -- handed her the note and told her to go into the bedroom and read it.

The note said she was pregnant but "everything was gonna be OK, Mom" and that she and boyfriend Casey Aldridge were going to raise the baby.

"I thought it was a joke," Spears said in an interview. "I kept waiting for the punch line."

Jamie Lynn, who starred in the Nickelodeon series "Zoey 101," and fiance Aldridge welcomed daughter Maddie Briann in June.

Lynne Spears said Britney is now back on track.

The 26-year-old pop star recently picked up three awards at the MTV Video Music Awards and announced Monday that she'll release her new album, "Circus," on Dec. 2, her 27th birthday.

"She's strong, she's resilient, she's had some big bumps in the road, but Britney's fine," she said. "Britney is headed to the top once again."

'Xanadu' exits

Pack up those roller skates and leg warmers.

"Xanadu," the roller-disco musical loosely adapted from the cult 1980s film, will close Oct. 12 at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre, producer Rob Ahrens has announced. It will have played 528 performances.

"Xanadu" opened in July 2007 to mostly enthusiastic reviews and was one of the four shows nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award. Based on the 1980 movie that starred Olivia Newton-John, the stage version features Kerry Butler, Cheyenne Jackson, Tony Roberts, Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa.

The musical did strong business in July and August after Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast. But Goldberg departed Sept. 7, and the show faced the lean box-office months of September and October. The production has yet to recoup its capitalization, estimated at between $4 million and $5 million.

A national tour of "Xanadu" is planned.

O'Neals arrested

Ryan O'Neal and his son were arrested yesterday after authorities said they found drugs at the actor's Malibu home during a routine probation check.

Investigators suspect both men had methamphetamine, but the substances still need to be tested, L.A. County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Sheriff's deputies and probation officers went to O'Neal's home for a routine check of his son, Redmond, who is serving three years of probation after pleading guilty in June to drug possession charges.

Whitmore said in addition to drugs that deputies suspect belong to Redmond, deputies also found narcotics in Ryan O'Neal's living area. Both men remain in custody on $10,000 bail and could be charged with felony possession of narcotics.

Ryan O'Neal, 67, was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for "Love Story." Redmond, 23, is his son from a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.

A call to Ryan O'Neal's agent, David Shapira, was not immediately returned.
