The U.S. Forest Service has upped the amount of oil spilled by vandals from drill site storage tanks into creeks in the Allegheny National Forest, McKean County, over the weekend from 10,000 gallons to 45,000 gallons and says some of it has found its way into the Allegheny Reservoir.
The Forest Service also reported yesterday that the spill has killed three beavers in addition to many fish on Chapel Fork, North Fork of Chapel Fork and Indian Run, all of which flow into Chapel Bay and the reservoir.
A father and son from Bradford, both former employees of Snyder Brothers Inc., an oil and natural gas firm, were arrested Sunday and charged with vandalizing six oil storage tanks by opening the valves.
Booms have been placed in the streams to contain the oil, and cleanup of the soil and water is under way. State and federal agencies are assessing the environmental damage.
