Here is the text of a statement by Michelle Machusko. It was read in court on Monday by Deputy District Attorney Mark Tranquilli because Ms. Machusko has trouble speaking:
First and foremost she wants to know why? Why did he do this to us, Jonathan, Michael, me, our families? It was so stupid and senseless.
Judge, I want you to know how my life has been permanently altered. I was very independent and active. Now I need a caregiver to help me with basic daily living. I have panic attacks in crowds. I cannot drive due to impaired vision. I wear a hearing aid due to partial hearing loss and have constant ringing in my ear. I cannot work at a job I enjoyed. I cannot walk long distances and need the use of a wheelchair I have to wear a brace to hold my ankle in place.
I cannot pursue my passion for ballet. I have no feeling on the entire right side of my body. I have no use of my right arm or hand. Due to being shot in my shoulder and elbow, I have a plate holding my arm together.
I will never attend college again due to permanent brain damage and must pay back a $22,000 school loan.
Last Tuesday I had reconstructive surgery to replace the bone in my skull that was shattered by the bullet lodged in my brain put there as he held my face down.
I am angry that I will never see my friends. I am angry with what he is putting our families through.
I will never forgive him for doing this to us.
Jonathan and Michael, rest in peace. I miss you.
