Allegheny County Police and the medical examiner's office shared little new information today at an afternoon press conference called to shed light on the case of a teenager found dead Friday with her abdomen sliced open and her baby missing.
But County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt did say that Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, who had appeared at West Penn Hospital with a newborn baby on Wednesday whom she falsely claimed to be her own, would be charged with homicide in connection with the death of Kia Johnson, 18, of McKeesport.
Ms. Johnson's decomposing body was found in Ms. Curry-Demus' Wilkinsburg apartment Friday. She was identified based on dental records.
Even with the results of an autopsy completed today, police said they were unable to determine a cause of death. Neither could police say what type of implement was used to slice open Ms. Johnson.
She was found face down, bound with duct tape with plastic over her head alongside a placenta.
At the press conference at county police headquarters, Superintendent Moffatt also said police did not know whether Ms. Johnson was alive or dead when her baby was taken. Toxicology test results are not available.
Ms. Curry-Demus is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
