Calgon, workers reach agreement
Sunday, July 20, 2008

A tentative agreement has been reached between Calgon Carbon Corp. and the United Steelworkers union.

The accord with USW Local 5032 was reached Friday; the union will vote on it at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the American Legion Hall in McKees Rocks.

Local 5032, which has 60 members, voted down the company's most recent offer on June 30. At that time union leaders said the proposed pact contained unacceptable terms covering health and retirement benefits. Workers at Calgon's Neville Island plant have been locked out since March 1.

"The tentative agreement is a result of not only the members sticking together, but the groundswell of community support and movement from the company," said Jerry Morton, unit president.
