Monday, May 12, 2008

An Amish man and one of his children remained in critical condition last night after being injured Saturday in Mercer County when a pickup truck careened into their buggy.

Benjamin Kempf, 29, of Clarks Mills, Mercer County, was in critical condition in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio, and his 5-year-old daughter, Erma, was listed as critical but stable in Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Three other Kempf children were also admitted to Children's. David, 6, and Melvin, 4, were in good condition, and Miriam, 1, was in fair condition.

State police said the truck, driven by Jennifer Crenshaw, 38, of Geneva, Ohio, crossed into the oncoming lane on State Road 358 in Perry and struck a utility pole around 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

The pickup rolled once before hitting the buggy. Everyone in the buggy was ejected.

Ms. Crenshaw has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, five counts of aggravated assault while driving under the influence, and numerous other traffic offenses. She suffered minor injuries.
