Roosevelt plans to make his recommendation on Schenley future May 19
Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt last night said he plans to make a recommendation May 19 about the future of the Pittsburgh Schenley High School building.

That would pave the way for a school board vote in June, a month later than expected.

In February, the board directed Mr. Roosevelt to make a recommendation this month. That fueled speculation that board members also would vote in May.

Mr. Roosevelt's report was not on the agenda at last night's Business and Finance Committee meeting, however, and the Education Committee meeting scheduled for today has been canceled.

Mr. Roosevelt said last night he'd like to present the recommendation May 19 at the rescheduled Education Committee meeting, but that wouldn't give the board time to digest the information by its May 21 legislative meeting. That's why he would have board members vote in June instead.

Pushing back the timetable also would give the public an opportunity to comment on the recommendation.

The June hearing's date was not immediately available, but the monthly hearing is held before the legislative meeting.

In October, Mr. Roosevelt proposed closing the historic Schenley building at the end of this school year, saying the district couldn't afford about $64 million to address asbestos and other maintenance problems. He proposed reassigning the students to other buildings, including two new schools. When students, parents and others protested, he agreed to give the Schenley building an additional look.

Last night, Mr. Roosevelt said the additional study has cast the building's status in a "different light," but he declined after the meeting to elaborate.

A majority of board members last week said they still want to save the building. "It is an extremely difficult decision," Mr. Roosevelt said.
