Roethlisberger thanked team management, saying he had always hoped to emulate quarterbacks like Dan Marino and John Elway, whose entire careers were spent with one organization.

Fans from across the region poured into Downtown Pittsburgh on Friday for a fitting tribute to Myron Cope, who died Wednesday of respiratory failure at the age of 79.

Urged on by Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and surprise guest Dan Rooney, owner of the Steelers, fans waved their Terrible Towels to honor the man whose 35-year career as a broadcaster and personality elevated him to icon.

The Steelers memorialized Myron Cope at an afternoon news conference in which team president Art Rooney II called the longtime broadcaster "a close friend."

Myron Cope, longtime Pittsburgh broadcaster and the voice of the Steelers, died today at the age of 79.

In declining health since even before his 2005 retirement after a record 35 years of Steelers broadcasts, Mr. Cope died of respiratory failure.

The Penguins headed into Tuesday's NHL trade deadline day not expecting to make any major moves. Instead, they pulled off the biggest trade of the day: a five-player blockbuster that netted them Atlanta Thrashers star Marian Hossa.

The Penguins parted with fan and locker room favorites Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen, 2007 first-round pick Angelo Espositio and their 2008 first-round pick. They also received winger Pascal Dupuis from Atlanta in the deal.

She works at The Wellness Center in Millvale from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekly and anyone, regardless of age or income is welcome to recieve services for free.

Mrs. Wadsworth comes from a background of emergency medicine, but has welcomed the change of pace.

A fire this morning caused extensive damage to a home in the 2000 block of Merwyn Avenue, Sheraden, but three young boys and their babysitter escaped the blaze unharmed.

Investigators told Post-Gazette news partner KDKA-TV the fire may have been started by one of the young boys playing with matches.

A model $85 million effort coordinated by HUD, the FBI, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, city police and two private developers has been steadily improving life for this neighborhood, where 90 percent of the households are headed by single black women.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission spends $2.7 million of hunter-generated funds for a put-and-take pheasant stocking program that is not intended to reestablish a naturally reproducing population.

In Kansas, where the Indonesian birds were originally stocked a century ago, natural reproduction has resulted in a vibrant pheasant hunt.

Kords for Kids was the brainchild of 17-year-old Logan Handelsman, who hopes to use a passion for music that he shares with many of his classmates as therapy for the kids at The Children's Institute. He came up with the idea about a year ago.

"I felt that there are plenty of kids out there that don't get to have that opportunity to experience music the way kids from Shady Side do," he said.

Today is the first day high school players can sign a binding national letter-of-intent with a college. It was thought Ohio State and Michigan were his leaders, and a number of Pryor's friends and acquaintances told the Post-Gazette that Ohio State was going to be his choice.

But at a news conference today Pryor acknowledged Penn State has risen in his eyes recently. His father also likes Penn State.

Touring nationally for her latest Sneaky Pie Brown title in her best-selling crime series, author Rita Mae Brown dropped in at the Post-Gazette Tuesday to talk about her books and efforts to rescue unwanted animals. Her newest addition is "Purrfect Murder."

Ms. Brown is the author of more than 35 books, both fiction and nonfiction, as well as numerous television scripts that have brought her four Emmy nominations. She's active in supporting no-kill animal shelters. Her appearance here, presented by Oakmont's Mystery Lovers Bookshop, benefited Animal Friends.

Feb. 5, 2008 ~ Video: Family and friends gather to remember Jolesa Barber


Mourners filled a North Side church this afternoon for the funeral of 12-year-old Jolesa Barber, who was shot to death Jan. 28.

Around 400 people gathered in Allegheny Center Alliance Church to remember the Perry South girl who loved to run track. Jolesa and her mother, Kimberly Wade, were shot shortly after they arrived at the home of Jolesa's sister on Brightridge Street. Her mother was injured. Police have charged Anthony Wilson, 30, and Michael Gist, 15, in the incident.

Feb. 5, 2008 ~ Video: Pirates and Sanchez agree on new contract


The Pirates and second baseman Freddy Sanchez sounded equally satisfied by the contract extension they signed today, one that could cover three years and pay as much as $18.9 million.

"I'm thrilled," Sanchez said at a PNC Park news conference this afternoon. "Pittsburgh is where I want to be. Everybody knows that. For me and my family, it was kind of a no-brainer. We love this community, and we appreciate the support that our fans give us. There's nothing better than going on the field knowing the fans are on your side, like they are here."

Feb. 5, 2008 ~ Video: Anti-violence rally held on North Side


One week ago, 12-year-old Jolesa Barber was fatally shot in a barrage of fire aimed at her sister's North Side home.

On Monday afternoon, a group called One Vision One Life held an anti-violence rally outside the home. Many participants held up signs that carried pictures of children and the words, "Don't shoot. We want to grow up."

U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan yesterday announced the formation of a local, state and federal joint task force to delve into what she said are scores of cases of mortgage fraud.

The cases of fraud, she said, involve millions in phony loans, bad credit and broken homes throughout the region.

Feb. 2, 2008 ~ Video: Tea Party protests drink tax


Clad as Indians and mad as hornets, a trio of comedians took to the Mon Wharf yesterday for a symbolic tea party. All that was missing was the tea. In a region noted for the Whiskey Rebellion, local comic Brad Ryan led his comrades to the edge of the Monongahela River where they dumped faux beer, wine and liquor into the waters to protest the county's new 10 percent tax on alcoholic beverages. Nick Milton and Blake Carter, who also work the local comedy club circuit, swigged from a bottle containing water distinctly not of the "firewater" variety, and tossed a few empty beer cases into the water.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. -- Brace yourself for more wintry weather.

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today, leading the groundhog to forecast six more weeks of winter.

Each Feb. 2, thousands of people descend on Punxsutawney, a town of about 6,100 people about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, to celebrate what essentially had been a German superstition.

Jan. 31, 2008 ~ Video: Police announce arrest of suspect, father


Pittsburgh homicide detectives apprehended 15-year-old Michael Gist, a suspect in the shooting of 12-year-old Jolesa Barber, around 6:30 a.m. today at a motel in South Greensburg.

At a news conference, police announced they also have charged Mr. Gist's father, Michael Franklin, of Greensburg, with hindering apprehension of his son. Police found Mr. Franklin after searching several locations in Greensburg.
