What is NIE?

The Post-Gazette Newspaper In Education program is a community service offered to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers. When ordered in quantities of five or more, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is available at scholastic rates. The programs and curriculum guides are designed to make the most of the "daily textbook." Students use the Post-Gazette as a supplementary text in math, science, social studies and language arts.

The newspaper brings the real world into the classroom. News is history as it happens. Teachers can also use the comics to teach the alphabet, the sports section to teach geography or the stock listings to teach economics and math -- and much more! The newspaper is also an excellent source for adult literacy and job training programs.

Students perceive the newspaper as an adult source of information. As they develop competency in a vital lifetime skill, they learn the importance of a free press and the responsibilities that face an informed citizen. But above all, they're reading.
